Kentucky Vacation Chapter 4: A Festival...
After Adrienne, Aaron & Lisa-Anna, Amy and Ryan returned from their exploratory walk of the area...
…and the Grandparents and Leo were finished lounging on the front porch...…and I was done checking on Heather, just "one more time" until I think she was ready for us to leave her alone for a little while…
…we decided to go check out the Three Forks River Festival in nearby Beattyville (said with a distinct Kentucky drawl). Advertised in the events was a Duck Dynasty Look Alike Contest, a talent show and a pet show (not to be confused with each other). It sounded interesting enough.
We piled into the van and headed out. We got lost once, then almost missed the festival because we drove by it, not realizing the handful of cars, miscellaneous craft vendors (one with dolls wearing elaborate crocheted dresses that I remembered from the era of the 70's) and the smattering of food stands was the festival.
It was a little awkward walking around as the biggest group of people there. But we were here and we were going to stay awhile. The water park on the festival grounds was open and we gravitated towards it debating how to play in it without getting too wet.
Ryan and Lisa-Anna devised a game of tag with the various water shoots and even though they look like they are getting soaked, they aren't. As for the rest of us, we either found a spot in the sun or ended up under a canopy for shade. I for one was a sun seeker.
Disclaimer: Before looking a pictures of some of our bare legs, you may need to be aware that eye protection is needed to prevent injury from the glare.
Then came the moment we had anticipated. The talent show began and before we knew it, all three acts were done. Rated by the Maust family spectators, the girl clogging finished first, followed closely by the hula-hoop act, with a soloist coming in third. We thought about sticking around for the Duck Dynasty look-alike contest, but out of the folks we saw there, Aaron probably had more facial hair than any of them and he just wasn't feeling quacky that day.
There are views….
….and then there are views:
I figure if my parents can kiss in public...
…so can we.
Along the way, here's what I've learned:
1. A Festival is fun, no matter how big or small.
2. Facial hair is important when entering a Duck Dynasty contest.
3. Spending time together is better than…well, just about anything.
4. Sometimes those 3 dots say a lot…
5. Look to your parents to set an example, and if necessary, do as they do.
Stay tuned for the next installment where we take off on a quest to find Suzannah's Arch.
To be continued…
Love,
Dianne
